Our history

La Frassina estate came into being in 1940 on a 500 hectare stretch of land which was originally part of the lagoon valley. It was recovered through the last reclamation works undertaken in the area - the first were carried out under the Republic of Venice. Through the digging of channels for the collection of water, the use of water-scooping pumps, the construction of new banks and the reinforcement of the old ones, the privately-funded reclamation also retained some adjacent strips of land for the native fish and bird populations. At about ten kilometres from the sea, the estate is set between valleys, groundwater and drainage streams and farmland: the Nicesolo Canal, or Canalon, the Zignago Valley, with its mixture of farming, fishing and hunting, the Franchetti Valley with its hunting and fishing, and the Lemene River.

In 1948, Ernest Hemingway lived between Venice and the Lagoon: he used to go hunting here and drew inspiration for his novel Across the River and into the Trees, the story of Colonel Cantwell, torn between the emotions of war and a passion for hunting, wine and women.

"...and drank a little of the light, dry, red wine which was as friendly as the house of your brother, if you and your brother are good friends".
